Fix Missing Textures in SketchUp Models
Learn why textures may appear missing in your 3D model and how to fix it
When uploading a SketchUp model to Sentio VR, some textures may appear transparent or missing in the VR walkthrough. This is typically caused by reversed faces in the SketchUp model — surfaces where the texture is applied to the back face instead of the front face.
Most 3D viewers and VR applications only render the front face of a surface. If a texture is painted on the back face in SketchUp, it will look correct inside SketchUp but appear missing in Sentio VR.
How to Identify Reversed Faces
With your 3D model open in SketchUp:
- Go to View > Face Style > Monochrome. This strips all textures and shows front faces as white and back faces as blue.
- Go to View > Hidden Geometry to reveal all surfaces.
- If you see blue faces on the exterior of your model, those faces are reversed and will likely appear transparent in Sentio VR.
How to Fix Reversed Faces
Open a Component or Group until you can edit the geometry. Then use one of the two methods below.
Method A: Orient Faces (Recommended for Large Sections)
- Click on a white (front-facing) exterior surface.
- Right-click on the surface and select Orient Faces from the context menu.
- All connected editable faces should automatically align to match the selected face's orientation.
Note: Some surfaces in detailed or complex geometry may not orient correctly with this method. You may need to fix those manually using Method B.
Method B: Reverse Face (For Individual Surfaces)
- Click on a blue (back-facing) surface that is incorrectly showing on the exterior.
- Right-click on the surface and select Reverse Faces from the context menu.
- The face flips — the blue surface becomes white.
Tip: You can select a group of surfaces and reverse them all at once to speed up the process.
Verify Before Uploading
Before uploading your model to Sentio VR:
- Switch the View back to View > Face Style > Shaded with Textures.
- Confirm that the textures and materials appear correctly on all surfaces.
- Upload the corrected model via the Sentio VR web uploader or SketchUp plugin.
How Much Does This Fix?
Based on our testing, correcting reversed faces resolves approximately 80% of missing texture issues encountered when viewing SketchUp models in Sentio VR.
