Tips and tricks to optimise your Sketchup model for smooth presentations in VR devices - especially Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR

The goal of optimisation

Viewing models in VR is a great experience - but given the current state of hardware devices - some steps are required to be taken to enable smooth VR presentations of 3D models. The goal of optimisation is to make some minor changes to your model so that they load easily in VR presentations.

Sketchup model recommendations for Gear VR and Oculus Go

  1. Less than 50 MB
  2. Less than 250.000 polygons

Recommendations for optimising Sketchup models

Remove objects/entities that are never shown to user
If you do not want to show the plumbing or electric wiring to the users then does not make sense to include it while submitting the model.

Remove external landscape , surrounding forest/trees/hill/grass/leaves or roads
Put these entities in a layer and hide the layer before uploading.

Remove some of the repetitive objects like chairs.
If you have 8-10 chairs you can reduce it 4-5 chairs without compromising on look and feel.

Cutting down on number of vertices on the objects that are polygon heavy or contain more faces.

Above image shows David with 2 million faces on the left side with decreasing number of faces till 1000. Even if you use David's with 5K faces your viewing experience will be good and you will top notch optimization.

Here also you can see triangles are reduced but still the difference in what you see is negligible. So use low polygon objects in your model.

Have simple mesh or objects in your model.
Do not combine different objects into one e.g Do not combine walls and floors. Do not combine objects on the floor with mesh of the floor.
